2016 52 World Championship – Race 7 Summary

Azzurra won Race 7 of the 52 World Championship Mahón 2016, earning themselves a big lead – over 250 metres – ahead of the fleet.

Racing in changeable, puffy 8-12kts of SWW’ly breeze Azzurra were best off the start under a black flag. Phoenix fell foul of this and had to sit the race out.

Azzurra were fast up the early left of the beat, achieving a solid, clear lane of breeze and were then able to extend on successive legs. Provezza were second all of the way around the course but were pipped on the finish by Quantum Racing, who gained from an early mid-fleet position.

Provezza strengthen their second place but Rán Racing were judged to foul Gladiator on approach to the first windward mark, dropping them to 11th on the water. Their expensive 10th drops them to fourth overall while Azzurra are now three points behind Provezza. Quantum’s lead is now restored to 18 points.
