Azzurra at the double

Azzurra put together two wins today to establish a clear lead in the 52 SUPER SERIES regatta at the 34th Copa del Rey MAPFRE. Key to their second race win was their port tack layline call which allowed them to close the door on Quantum Racing and round the mark clear ahead of Alegre.

In a stronger sea breeze than Race 1 Gladiator made a nice start off the pin end of the line but it was Azzurra which had control once the left group tacked on to port. Alegre stayed more middle up the beat and came in on starboard at the buoy in second. Alegre made a small gain down the run and the two were head to head on opposite marks at the gate, but Azzurra had drawn slightly clear by the second windward mark and went on to win. Quantum Racing just lost out on third place to Platoon in the closest thing to a dead heat, Quantum Racing scored fourth.
