Gladiator is a well-known team owned and backed by successful English businessman Tony Langley.
They have learned a great deal, improved progressively since their first foray into the TP52 regattas in the Med in 2009 and are one of the most ardent fans and supporters of the 52 SUPER SERIES. With a new boat in 2015, a Vrolijk design that was built by Persico in Italy, Gladiator did not sail to their full potential or realise their highest expectations.
Tony Langley’s Gladiator crew had a bit of a mixed year in 2016. Ian Walker, the Volvo Ocean Race winner and double Olympic medallist came in and added his consistent influence as tactician. Their pre-season training included the Key West Race Week regatta, but thereafter they chose not to race at the Gaastra Palma Vela warm-up in May. Gladiator was at its best in the stronger breezes, especially potent downwind, and when it did blow, the British-flagged team proved themselves able to score high level results.
