52 SUPER SERIES Facts

  1. 2022 is the tenth anniversary year of the 52 SUPER SERIES which was founded in Barcelona, May 2012 when five boats raced.
  2. When Sled won the 2021 title they became only the third team to win the overall series title along with Quantum Racing and Azzurra. Quantum won in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2018, and Azzurra were winners in 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2019.
  3. Nine new boats were built for the 2018 52 SUPER SERIES by two design studios, Botin Partners & Judel Vrolijk.
  4. At the end of the 2021 season just three points separated the top three teams.
  5. TP52 team owners are most often business owners leaders from a variety of backgrounds from engineering to tech to finance and sales.
  6. The TP52 class really started out in the USA aorund 2000-1 for the Transpac Race from Los Angeles to Hawaii - hence TP52. The class came to Europe and the Med in 2005.
  7. An average of nine or ten TP52 crews will take part during 2022, representing seven different nations: Italy, USA, Great Britain, Thailand, Turkey, South Africa, Germany. Russia remain banned in line with World Sailing’s policy.
  8. It takes an average of 2-3 seconds to hoist a TP52 spinnaker to the top of the 22-metre mast.
  9. Sailors from over 15 nations are represented onboard the 52 SUPER SERIES fleet in 2022.
  10. TP52s are boats built under a box rule, meaning that each boat must fit within a set of measurement parameters defined by the class rule.
  11. Downwind in a strong breeze TP52’s can sail at well over 20 knots, which is why the owners and teams just have so much fun racing them!
  12. Over 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year. We’re working hard to minimise our impact on the environment.
